Rawson hosiers, Nottingham
« on: Friday 04 November 11 20:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have found, on Google books, a lot of references to various firms of hosiers containing the name Rawson in Nottingham in the 18th century. I can't, however, find out anything other than the fact that they existed, and I'd like to know more about these Rawsons.

I have done a lot of research on the Leicester Rawsons, hosiery manufacturers in the 18-19 centuries, and would like to know if there is a link.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find out more about the Rawson name + hosiery manufacture in Nott?

muchas gracias :)

Hi again. Not sure if they are connected, but two Rawsons were members of the Bromley House Library 1816 to 1916. One listed as living in appartments at the Castle. Burned down i believe by rioters in 1831. A lot of anti hosiery factory people involved.

Thanks - I've come across those names before but not those specific websites. The later Rawsons mentioned on the library website (George, Francis, Sarah) were certainly part of my tree, but had moved to Notts from Leicester in the mid1800s.

I can trace my Leicester Rawsons back to 1730, baptism of Richard Rawson in Leicester (father William). They were a wealthy and influential family and I have seen Victorian reference to their being "an old Nottingham family".

I know that there was a William Rawson from Nottingham who married Ann Chapman in Leic in the 1740's; Ann was from a wealthy family; I wonder if this was my Richard's father on a second marraige (Ann was probably around 40yrs old at time of marriage). But I can't prove this.

The Leicester Rawsons made their money in the hosiery trade. It seems there were Nottingham Rawsons doing the same and I would love to know if this is co-incidence or two branches of the same family.

But as we're going back 300 years, records are much scantier  :(

Hi Annie,

Have you had a look here? = http://mssweb.nottingham.ac.uk/catalogue/

I don't know if this is the sort of thing you are looking for or even if  it helps  but I can see some of the Rawson hosier's mentioned and one of the later Leicestershire Rawson' s marrying in Nottinghamshire.

http://mss-cat.nottingham.ac.uk/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Persons&dsqCmd=Search.tcl

Person/corporate names - mentions; William Rawson "the elder" hosier of Nottingham  fl 1761-1769
& William Rawson  - Mr; 'esquire'; hosier; of Nottingham - 1857

And in the" Individuals named in presentments and marriage bonds"......

Rawson, John, fl 1814 (hosier of Nottingham (St Nicholas), Bondsman

Rawson, George, fl 1831 (of Leicester (St Margaret), Groom

Rawson, James, fl 1801 ('the elder'; of Leicester (St Martin), Leicestershire; father of groom)
Rawson, James, fl 1801 ('junior'; of Leicester (St Martin), Leistershire) - Groom

Sheila.

All of the Rawson's in the 1710 Poll Book of Nottingham & Nottinghamshire were framework Knitters.  The entries in the Biographical Index are below:

- John, of Nottm.  Burgess 1677-8, fwk., B.N (day not recorded).  He or jr. also voted for freehold in Beeston.
- John, jr., of Nottm, Burgess 27 Feb., 1687/8, fwk., B.N
- Michael, of Nottm.  Burgess 7 June 1706, fwk., B.N
- William, of Nottm.  Burgess 30 June 1696, fwk., B.N.  Aged 22 when he married Elizabeth Wilkinson of Rolleston, 21 at R., 23 May 1698.

B.N = Burgensis natus, i.e the eldest son of a Burgess born in Nottingham after his father's enrolment.
fwk = frameworkknitter
