Hooks Mills Ashley Hill Bristol

Does anyone know the local history " Hooks Mills"
in particular about "Flour Mill" owed by the Jones Family

A Henry Jones had a mill there in 1863 but it could have gone further back to a Robert Jones.

GenUKI Gloucestershire has an 1830 Pigot's Directory of Bristol.

This shows Gibbons & Garrett, Miller, Hook's Mills, Bristol?

And in the Edinburgh Gazette, 26th February 1830:
Daniel Gibbons and Christopher Garrett the younger,
of Hook's Mills, Saint Paul's, Bristol, Gloucester,
millers.

In fact, as far as I can remember, Hook's Mills was just the name of an area of Bristol, rather than a mill as such.
In fact, the CofE Girl's Orphanage was founded there in 1795?

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

This is a very old thread but just in case someone looks at it again:

There was mill on the site of Hooks Mill going back to the 16th century at least. In 1548 one Henry Brayne granted to his son Robert arable land including "a water mill, formerly in the tenure of John Green". The mill was known as Green's Mill and as Grove's Mill but by 1637 had been acquired by a brewer called Robert Hooke.

In 1823 it was bought by Robert Jones for £2,030.

When it was later offered for sale in 1870 it was described as a "Powerful Water Mill working three sets of stones"

Happy to help. (I'm a local and have been doing research on the area.)

By the way, KGarrad mentioned Daniel Gibbons and Christopher Garrett the younger as being of Hooks Mill.

The Gloucestershire Land Tax Books (available on Ancestry) for 1829 have "Jones" as the Proprietor and Danl. Gibbons as Occupier. (The actual property isn't named but can be deduced from the surrounding owners, rateable value, etc.) So, at that time, Gibbons and Garrett were probably tenants of Robert Jones.
