Military returns WW One
« on: Sunday 06 November 11 09:26 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how the Military Returns system worked?

I have a Private William Jenkinson 7th Seaforth Highlanders ,who died at a Military Hospital in Clitheroe Lancashire, England. He is interred beside his family at Greenlaw Berwickshire. He came back as a Royal Scot. Not a Seaforth Highlander.

Did the Army send his body North on a train and the family then have to go to a Railway Station with a Horse & Cart to pick the man up?
How exactly did it work?

In WW! the casualty figures were massive, unimaginable really.
The Battle of Loos & the Battle of the Somme were catastrophic by any standards.

I doubt also if parents or brothers & Sisters on receipt of the deceased would be allowed to view them, due to in many cases, horrific injries.

Am I right in thinking that he died at Whalley Military Hospital?  As I understand it those who died at the hospital were buried at Whalley (Queen Mary's Hospital) Military Cemetery unless the family made other arrangements. There were no returns from overseas of course.

Yes, it says on the Commonwealth War site that he is interred at Greenlaw.

And, it was Whalley Hospital Clitheroe.

Ofcourse the Kirk Yards are crammed with Military headstones.
These are obiously Laddies that died on home turf.

William Jenkinson is mentioned on the family stone.

I also have a John Renton KOSB mentioned on his Mums stone at Coldstream.
