Dawson
« on: Sunday 06 November 11 11:49 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace my great grandfather's family and have hit a brick wall with Scotlands People so any help or advice would be gratefully received.
My grandfather's birth record on Scotlands People shows that he was born on 6 Jan 1888 in Logie, name John Dawson. He was illegitimate, so it just names his mother as Mary Dawson, no address.
Is there any way to request an original copy of his birth certificate? And if so, will it provide any further information relating to his mother?
If not, can anyone advise me on how to find his mother? There are a couple of Mary Dawsons on the 1881 census in Logie, so not sure where to start.
Thank you..and be kind as this is my first post!!

Hi Sarah72

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

As far as I am aware, the information on the Birth record online at SP (that you have downloaded)  is what was used to create the actual birth 'certificate'.  There is no original copy of the individual Birth certificate - what's on Scotland's People is what there is.

Any additional information to what was originally recorded, is noted in an RCE (see Scotlands People FAQs), and not on the original entry, which has a notation attached that there is an RCE to refer to.

Where is John in 1891 and 1901, do you know?

Just to clarify - on the 1881 birth record, his address of birth is just 'Logie'?  And the informant is his mother? And her address is "Logie' also?

Cheers

thanks for that info.
the birth record simply states he was born at Blairlogie, and the birth was registered in Logie at the beginning of Feb-see attached (if this has worked!!)
I haven't found him on the 1901 census yet.On the 1911 census he is living with a foster family, so I am really struggling to find his mother and her family as you can imagine

Top L/h corner refers to a 'Clerical Error, Col, Six (?)' and then signature. Was there a written error on one of the columns that, for example, was scored through and then corrected?

Sarah, there is an 1890 marriage showing for a William HOUSTON and a Mary DAWSON in Logie, Perthshire. This might be them in 1891:

William Houston   30, market gardener b. Inchinnan, Renfrew
Mary Houston 28 b. Alva, Stirlings
John Houston 3 b. Logie....this might be William Dawson?
Mary Houston Under 1 Month b. Logie....this birth cert would confirm parents' marriage date

Address: Orchard Cottage, Logie
