Thomas Jones born Kilbreffy
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 17:41 GMT (UK) »
According to the family, Thomas Jones was born in Kilbreffy about 1829/30.   He married in South Africa in 1859 (aged 29) and died East London, South Africa, in 1871 (aged 42).   They had 5 children: Frances, John, Mary, Thomas William & Emily Annie Elizabeth.   Nothing is known of his life pre SA except for a Crimean War medal which is said to have been his.

Kilbreffy records show John Jones (jnr & snr) as landowners in 1873, John & Thomas Jones as heads of families in the 1901 census and a John Jones with a daughter Frances in the 1911 census.

If possible, I would love to have confirmation of his birth and the names of his parents - any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Sandy

Does the marriage record not mention any details about his father ?

His birth is well before the start of civil registration, so a search of the relevant church records would be required to check for a possible baptism.

...

Griffith's Valuation records show William, John, Robert and Henry Jones as the occupants of Kilbreffy townland. All three are shown with houses, offices and land, and leasing their property from a Sir E. S. Hutchinson Bt. This part of the valuation is dated 1854.

Hi Shane

Thank you so much.   The marriage record gives no details of his father and the witnesses are no help either.   His eldest child was 11 when her father died and 13 when her mother died so not much is known about him - she only completed his death notice in 1879, eight years after his death.   Thank you also for the 1854 valuation info.

Much appreciated
Regards
Sandy

Where did the detail about him being born in the townland of Kilbreffy come from ?

If you know what denomination his family were, I can see what parish is involved and what dates records are available..

You may have seen this already? For what it is worth.
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH/2011-08/1312221437

It says:
"THOMAS JONES (born Kilbreffy, Ireland, abt 1829 - 1871) and JEMIMA DOOLE (1838/41 - 1873), one of the Irish women immigrants who arrived at East London in 1857 on the "Lady Kennaway". Thomas joined the Convict Department as an overseer in 1859 and their children were baptized in St Peter's, East London between 1860 - 1869. There was some connection to ROBERT & JANE BODLEY (born NICHOLLS, 1822 - 1889) of King Williams Town as Jane was a witness at one of the baptisms - perhaps Jemima was employed by them before her marriage? I think Thomas may have been a soldier prior to 1859."

maybe that's where the precise place of birth comes from ?

was wondering about that since the marriage record sounded like it was lacking in detail.
