Holy Trinity, Biscot - completed with thanks :)
« on: Monday 14 November 11 15:26 GMT (UK) »
I have just found a baptism record for my late mother-in-law.  She was baptised at Holy Trinity, Biscot (I had no idea her family had ever lived in Bedfordshire!) in 1939.

The vicar who baptised her has signed a baptism card - but I can't read his signature.  It looks like "A ? Thewring".  I've tried Googling but to no avail.

I wonder whether anyone might live in the location and could perhaps pop into the church to see if the vicar is listed on one of those boards they usually have up of past incumbents?  Thanks in advance.  :)

Googling Biscot vicars -biscuit shows on the first page of hits Albert Ephraim Shewring, Vicar of Biscot

The link won't open, as it's BLARS former search engine, but the full entry can be found at    http://apps.bedscc.gov.uk/bedsccis3/search.aspx and putting Shewring in the name line. The entry reads

Reference: P157/2/1

Title: Agreement Parties: (i) Rev.Albert Ephraim Shewring, Vicar of Biscot; Rev.Francis Whittaker Hunt, Rector of Toddington; Rev.Francis Neville Greaves, V

Date: 10 Aug 1937

And once you know his name it's easy to do a reverse search

http://www.allsaintswimbledon.org.uk/index.php?page=Curates_Assistant_Priests says
A.E. Shewring. (Albert Ephraim)  Priested 1898. Curate 1904-1908. Left to go to as Curate-in-Charge S. Luke's Kingston (1908-14). Then became Vicar of St Philip, Cheam Common (1914-21). Rector of Dalham (1921-30).  Vicar of Biscot (1930-56)

Rev Albert Ephraim Shewring was my grandfather and I arrived in England from Australia in 1965 some four days before he died. I was able to attend his funeral at which time he was laid to rest in the grounds of his church Holy Trinity, Biscot next to his beloved wife Annie.
