Mary Ann Reeves of Winchester
« on: Tuesday 15 November 11 16:32 GMT (UK) »
Mary Ann Ricquier, born 21 Aug 1812 married Henry Reeves on !7 Feb 1835 at Winchester. He died, aged 44 on 14 Mar 1856 at Winchester.I have searched freeBMD Winchester District 1851-1901 for the death of Mary Ann and came across two possibilities.I sent for a Death certificate for one possibility, but chose the wrong Mary Reeves. She was aged 27 and a dairymaid who died on 28 Apr 1854 at the County Hospital.I can't trace Mary Ann in Censuses subsequent to 1851.Any advice on what to do next without making the same mistake would be much appreciated.

Hi Benrita,  Do you know if they had any childrenż There`s a Mary Ann Reeves widow age 70 living in Winchester 1881, with two daughters Louisa & Elizabeth.  This Census says they were all born Winchester although that`s not necessarily accurate.

She is married to William Reeves in 1861, also her unmarried sister is with them Elizabeth Henes.  :-\

I think I have them in 1841 in Winchester - all bn in County Mary age 27 and a Henry age 6 months
From the 1851 it looks as though Henry is the only child - place of birth for all Winton, Hampshire (Mary is 38)

In 1861 Henry junr appears in RG09 piece 693 folio 80 page 5 at one of my favourite Winchester 'watering-holes'.

I think his mother, if she survived, would have been pursued by suitors as a 'woman of substance'.  Has any attempt been made to locate her sister and/or her progeny?

It's possible Henry may have had a brother Linus REEVES reg'd 3Q 1853 Winchester, who is with an Edward RICQUIER in Alton in 1861 at RG09 piece 704 folio 70 page 17.  Beware of possible mistranscription of Linus!

In 1861 at Alton, Hampshire is Edward Ricquier and his family
RG9 704 f70 p17
There is a ----- Reeves age 7 bn Winchester Nephew with them - Possibly Lewis, he is still with them in 1871.

Is he a son of Mary Ann Reeves?

Henry Reeves ..... died, aged 44, on 14 Mar 1856 at Winchester.....
Any advice on what to do next ..... would be much appreciated.

If you're in a position to be able to visit Hampshire Record Office, you could try looking for Henry's burial in the register for West Hill Cemetery, as the churchyards of the City's Parishes were already full to capacity by that period.  If not, send me a PM with your email address and I'll pass on details of a local contact with access to the plan of the cemetery's burial plots.

I'm assuming that you hold a copy of Henry's death certificate and that there is evidence his widow survived him?  As they appear to have been an affluent couple, I'm hoping there may be a Memorial Inscription recorded prior to the removal of the stones in 1961, when they were placed against the wall.

I've put burial details for a likely Mary REEVES in the Winchester Ricquier topic:  Jun Quarter 1858.

However, in searching the baptisms for the Winchester RC churches I chanced on the baptism 20 Jan 1841 for John Henry [translation from Latin] REEVES, son of Henry & Mary.  As a consequence, I've since found him in 1871 at RG10 piece 1209 folio 103 page 43 and a likely marriage:
Jun 1862 REEVES John Henry / COOPER Sarah Jane Winchester  2c 173.
