sword - british sub parentage

census 1901 Ernest w sword born 1891 to isabella and james born newcastle living 137 molineux street heaton with 8 siblings.  HOWEVER on the 1911 census he is a border/baker living at 38 Pitt Street, Newcastle BUT is down as a british sub parentage. His parents were born in Newcastle area and never left the country.  Has anyone any ideas as to why heis the only child with this title

On the free index to the 1911 census his birthplace is given as Heaton Newcastle On Tyne Northumberland

I expect his father also mistakenly filled in the 'nationality' column, which should only have been done if he had been born abroad. As Nanny Jan has said, this quite often happened.

I don't think there is any suggestion he was born anywhere but Newcastle on Tyne.

I think it's because the column on the census form headed Nationality states:

State whether:-
(1) "British subject by parentage"
(2) "Naturalised British subject" giving year of naturualisation
or
(3) If a foreign nationality, state whether "French", "German", "Russion", etc.


As this was the first census where we have the original forms, completed by the householder themselves, some of them interpreted this instruction literally!

Just wondering if the Sword family are related to my late mother in law.  She was also born in Heaton and often talked about her cousin N Sword who would have been born around 1915/20.  There would have been a connection through either the name Chisholm or Bell.         June

 Ernest was the only Sword in this household on 1911.

 Form was probably completed by head of household.
Whoever filled it in completed as if all folk in the h/h , husband, wife and children and Ernest W the " boadder" , were born in Foreign County and British Subject by Parentage.

So very likely an error as already suggested.

 Anyway the birth of an Ernest William Sword was registered in the March Quarter of 1891 within Newcastle Registration District.

Hi Granger,  Did you know if N sword was male or female???  It sounds quite possible that there is a connection,  especially since they all lived in Heaton.  We had an Aunty Nelly (still trying to figure out what her real name would have been).  The sword family we are researching has 15 children one of whom is my grandmother yet we cant find any living connections as yet!!!

His name was Norman, and I am sure he worked for British Rail in Newcastle.   Sorry can't help with the name of his mother, but she was either a Bell or Chisholm.     June
