Can you tell me anything about these two?
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 17:49 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone give em any information about these two? Anything such as rank, date, regiment or anything else you can think of would be much appreciated. According to the family information I have, the gent. on the left served in the  Royal Marines in the years leading up to WW1 and signed on again in 1914. I don't know the details of the service of the gent. on the right, perhaps you can help?
Thanks in advance.

Standing soldier is  a Royal Engineers sapper  I think, his shoulder patch is 218th Independant Infantry Brigade, again not totally sure,
Sitting soldier is a Company Sergeant Major (wo2) with 4 long service and good conduct chevrons and as you say Royal Marines, his medal could be a South African Boer War medal maybe Kings South African medal.

Heres Sidneys record £3.50 to download
Hes RMLI (light Infantry)
The photos definately post 1918 and probably pre 1921 Sidney was entitled to Star,Brit War and Victory medals. He enlisted too late for Boer War
His record should be interesting It should give which ships etc he served on

Thanks for the prompt replies, very informative. As soon as I've finished typing this, I'll be onto the National Archives site to download the record.
I'm sure I'll have some more questions.
Thanks again.

As you said, Ady, Siney's service record is very interesting although, to me as a non-military person, it raises lots of questions, which I hope my fellow rootschatters can help answer, or at least point me in the right direction.
Sidney enlisted on 10 March 1903 and served through WW1 until 12 June 1922, but he actually signed on again in 1939 serving until 1941 when he would have been 56!
With such a long service there are many postings mentioned, including King Alfred in 1915-1917, where he was a Sergeant with G Company. Is there any way I can find out more og what his company would have done during this time?
On four occasions during the great war it says, in the column headed "Recommended for Medal and Gratuity" R.M.G four times. Any ideas on what that involved? (Or how I can find out.)
And, amy final question for now  ;D , what does the following say? It is in the "Rank" column, and appears chronologically after he was promoted from Sergeant.
Thanks a lot.

Cr Sergt = Colour Serjeant

If "Bert" is Albert Fell from Edgeley, son of Ann Jane (I see in 1901 he's got a brother called Sydney [sic] H), then his service record (2 batches) is on Ancestry. Service numbers 2918 and 442359.

Thanks for that. It is the same Albert Fell I'm looking for. Thanks for finding it for me.
