Judge - Sculcoates Workhouse
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 21:46 GMT (UK) »
I had such fantastic help with my last enquiry that I am hoping someone can help me with this one also.

My GGGrandmother Isabella Judge b c 1833 in Hull is listed at Sculcoates workhouse in the 1841 census. Also William Judge b:c 1829 is in the same workhouse and I am assuming he is probably her brother.

Also in the 1841 census I have found Ann Judge age 20 and Hannah Judge age 15 as a household on their own - both born in Sculcoates, both living in Hull, both Agricultural servants but not in another household.  I think they could well be Isabella and William's sisters as the household is very unusual.

I am assuming that the family were bereft of parents for some reason - death,  poverty, illness....

I can't find any record of Isabella Judge's birth or indeed any of the other children I think maybe her siblings and don't know how to go any further back.

Are the entry records to Sculcoates Workhouse available somewhere? It could give me a clue as to why Isabella was there aged 8.
Any help gratefully received
Thankyou.
Elaine

PS: Isabella Judge went on to work on farms becoming the dairy maid on the Fussey family farm in Lelley Dyke by 1861 and eventually married the farmers son - Thomas Fussey son of Thomas Hutchinson Fussey in 1865. They had 4 children of which only 2 survived - my GGrandmother Isabella Ann and her sister Hannah Mary.  She died in 1878.

William [Henry] and Ann [Stephenson]'s births certainly fit the brief but any sign of Isabella and Hannah?
And if Ann Stephenson Judge survives to be Ann Judge age 20 in 1841, why would you baptise another child Ann Lambert Judge in 1826? Surely you'd only do that if the first child named Ann had died? And Ann Lambert doesn't fit the 1841 census returns. She'd be 15 like Hannah.
I can't find any of them in the BMD - just the IGI like yourself - I take hints from the IGI but I don't trust it without confirmation.
I'm still confused but thank you for you help

No I don't. I only recently made the connection. I was hoping someone might be able look something up with regards her entry to the workhouse as it's possible she might not have known who her parents were. She might have been born there, certainly brought up there. etc

Cheers

Thank you for that.
The workhouse looked less austere in the 1900's than the more recent pics - but I doubt that was the truth if you were living there.
I know my Grandad refused to ever go into the Northern General because it was the old workhouse and he'd sworn he'd never go there.

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne so I'm not sure when I'll get the opportunity to go to the Hull City Archives but if anyone else is going there and could have a shufty I'd be very grateful.
Cheers

hi elaine
it,s the same all over the old folk had a dread and fear of the mere mention of the workhouse and in a some respects that was understandable but without them a lot of folk would never have gotten medical attention as before the nhs started up in 1948 all treatment had to be payed for privately and how many could afford that so at least with workhouse infirmaries they had some help .
as to hull archives why not get in touch and if you speak to them ever so nicely maybe some one will have a shufty for you , you ladies have a way with words  ;D ;D ;D ;D ,give it a go nothing lost if they won,t do it .
best wishes

Sculcoates Workhouse Records are not complete, so don't hold out much hope of finding much info.
I only know this because I heard someone talking about it from Hull Archives about a programme on Workhouses and they said for some strange reason the records are not intact/complete and gaps are a plenty.

But, who knows since last year, maybe they have been found or located elsewhere, check with the Treasure House Archives at Beverley, East Yorkshire as Sculcoates was part of the East Riding not Hull.
