Looking back at Newton Heath
« on: Saturday 19 November 11 18:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Could anybody tell me if they know where I can buy a copy of Looking back at Newton Heath.
There seems to be one-or-two copies in some local libraries, but I'd like to buy it for my Dad as a present.
I've tried contacting the publisher, Willow Publishing, but they haven't got back to me yet.

It took me years to get hold of a copy. I did, in the end find one on a car boot sale sadly the pages were falling out so I scanned it to digitally preserve it for my records.

If you use facebook try leaving a request on these groups
"Newton Heath-Forever" 800 members
"ANCOATS FOREVER" 1400 members
"MILES PLATTING FOREVER" 930 members

Maybe someone here has a copy they don't want

Thanks for your replies.

CaroleW - I haven't contacted the history society as I don't seem to be able to find any contact details for them.  I'll keep looking!

MancsMan - Thanks for the tip.  I stopped using Facebook earlier in the year.  I might temporarily re-activate it just to ask on those groups.  Could I ask, though, if you'd be prepared to send me a copy of your scans?  I will understand if you can't - just thought I'd ask.

Another possibility is to try the bookshop at the Manchester & Lancs FHS. You can see what they have on the website. I haven't looked recently but they used to have quite an impressive library of publications.

I notice you have on your post that you are intrested in Silk Weavers , well my ancestors came fro Scotland and were Campbells  , they settled in Manchester in about 1828and the next few generations are still here (I think) but I want to get information on the Silk Weavers to see if I can trace their daily work  I also need to find out where in Scotland they came from , any info you can help with will be appreciated

Hello Bodzy
My own interest is primarily in the Spitalfields silkweaving industry of East London. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries it may well be that life for silk weaving families was pretty much the same so the information I have (which is very little) may still be relevant. I have a little book published by Shire Publications entitled The Silk Industry  You can buy from them online and I would guess the current price is  about £5. It contains a list of other publications for further reading and a list of places to visit. Do I take it you live in the Manchester area? There is the Paradise Silk Museum in Macclesfield which you can visit and also the Heritage Centre at Macclesfield. Here is a link for further information:

http://www.manchester2002-uk.com/history/victorian/maccsilkmill.html

I do have an article which someone sent to me a few years ago about the silk weavers of Spitalfields and I would be happy to email it to you if you pm me with your email address. Many of the silkweavers in this area were Huguenots. I don't know if that was also the case in other parts of the country. If it is, that could be an interesting line of research.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
Chirp

Hello Chirp

Hope you don't min me butting in, but my own primary area of interest and research is the Huguenot community of East London and the silk industry there. I have helped uite a few people here trace these families. I would be very interested in a copy of your article too if you wouldn't mind.
