I am trying to find the birth dates of my Gt Gt Grandfather John Stone b. 1833 and his father John Stone b. 1800 both in Walsall. I would like to order their birth certificates but do not have the dates etc.

Hello

Births were officially recorded after 1837. So you cannot order certificates from the GRO.
Before it is parish records.

Pam

Thanks for that information. Do you know where the parish records are held? Are they held centrally in Walsall or in individual churches?

regards

I have had a good look around on all available free search sites and cant find any Christenings of Children of John/Matilda except for one;
ELIZA Stone 07 Feb 1836, Saint Matthew, Walsall, Staffordshire
(Familysearch.Org)

Now to confirm Matildas maiden name you can purchase a Birth Cert of one of the Children born post 1837 eg ELLEN c 1840 from 1841 Census.
Ellen Stone, Sept 1840, Walsall, 17 236

With a bit of deductive reasoning this is a possible Marriage of John/Matilda;
John STONE
Matilda JENNINGS
01 March 1830, Edgbaston, Warwickshire
(IGI Extracted Record)

Now a Matilda JENNINGS was Christened 13 March 1808, Saint Matthew, Walsall, Staffordshire to EDWARD/MARY Jennings
(Source Familysearch.Org)

Thank you very much Trish

they did have more than one child, the 1841 census states that there was Emma, John Jr. Eliza and Ellen. Matilda's name was Jennings and she was borne in 1808.
It is John and his father John I am having problems with, which is strange as John b. 1833 seemed to have been quite successful in saddle making having a factory employing 3 men, 3 boys and 10 women.
I presume from their address at 1 Vicarage Walk, that they were fairly well off at the time.

Thank you Cati
Mind you that would have made him 11 when he started the apprenticeship. Seems a bit young
