Adding to the idea that you can get invaluable family info from books where you might not have expected it:
I found photos of my grandfather and his siblings as children in the early 1900's in a book in our local history library which had been published years ago to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Chapel + Sunday School they all attended.
Their family was of very modest means and thus these were the only photos they would ever have had taken, as were similar ones in centenary edition of a book about the Harriers club for which they all ran as young men.
Such a gift to have these pictures- gems found in unexpected places!
( grandad was instantly recognisable, you didn't need to refer to the captions- his brother bears a staggering ressemblance to one of my sons, his g. grt grand nephew)

Hi Nick,
I wish that I could find a book like that,

The nearest one I have managed is a Diary written by the Vicar of the Village,
which my maternal family originate from.

It makes a passing reference to my great grandfather and his move to anther Area, where he had worked.  That was lucky indeed.

But photos, well that would be brilliant.

With ref. the Sunday School anniversary publication with old photos:
I found this in Huddersfield Library's local history room. I noticed there are a very large number of similarly local volumes which have been re-bound in dull-looking but servicable bindings by the libraries service. It seems they will take any local publication, short or long, on any topic and preserve it in this splendid way. So you get a lot of books/booklets about schools, chapels, clubs etc.
A really wonderful resource which, superficially at a glance, does not look interesting at all.
I also found a book about the football team my dear departed dad played for in the 1940's- we had lost the photos we had of his sporting career but I found them all again in this publication - quite an emotional moment for me. I was able to photocopy them for us all to see.

The detective novel 'Blood Detective' by Dan Waddell depends on a knowledge of old and closed London Underground stations ... until I read this I didn't realise there were defunct and no longer used stations.    Some good genealogy in this book too !!
