Cornish Miners 1901-1910
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 17:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find my husbands Grt grandfather who went to Africa to work in the mines during 1901-1911, he was listed in both the 1901 and 1911 census as his home address so somewhere in between this he travelled to africa.
Does the name De-Villiers mean anything to anyone, as he named his daughter Botha De-Villiers Luke after i presume what could have been his boss.

His name is:

Alfred Tom Luke
dob 1876 St Stephens Cornwall
m 1895 to Mary Pedlar Olga  L Key
d  1950

His occupation was a Mason

Hi Trevor,

yes it is definitely him as my husbands mum is still living and can confirm this is her father and grandfather, where did you find this record as i cannot find it on FindMyPast, perhaps he was later than 1911?

Hi I found a document in this archive when I typed in the name. Try this link. http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm200gi.

Then click on the RSA repository box, when it opens type in Luke Alfred and enter. A list of documents will appear, just click on Result Summary. Appears he died in 1968 in the Transvaal.Cheers Derek

hi sue
the passenger record is on FindMyPast  just put in a t luke no year of birth and it should come up on page 4 .
i still can,t find an incoming entry for him up to 1911 and if your sure of his marriage then the 1911 entry surely must be correct .
