1954 Birth in Grantown
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 16:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to locate any information I can find on (*). The only information I have is she was in Grantown in 1954 and gave birth there on Feb. 4 of that year. Any info would be appreciated. I am in the states and do not know how to go about finding this information from here. Thank you.

Added: Name taken off to protect the person's identity as standard practice on RootsChat for this period.

Can I ask where is Grantown? I have googled for this place and have found

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?rlz=1C1GPCK_en-GBGB441GB441&gcx=w&q=grantown&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl

I looked for a marriage and there is A  marrying in Kent in 1959 - but it seems a long way off from your person if they where in Scotland?

Grantown Scotland UK is the correct one. Some times it is called Grantown of Speyside I have noticed also.

Is it still true, if anyone knows, that a person must go through counseling before they are allowed to read their adoption file in Scotland?

Pixie, welcome to RootsChat  :)

I've moved your post over to the Moray board here on RootsChat given the location of the birth.

Need to take every care regarding possible living people at this stage, for that reason I have taken off the name of the birth mother as she may still be alive (or close descendants who may not be aware of the birth in 1954).

This is a help guide from the National Archives of Scotland regarding adoption - very informative for what you need www.nas.gov.uk/guides/adoptions.asp

I assume from the 1954 birth year that you (or the person you may be helping out) has the birth cert with the relevant information. This period is now so recent that due to data protection you need to order all BMD data. The official pay to view site for all BMD searches in Scotland is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

Have you tried searching for possible marriage or death for the birth mother?

You are not in Scotland but in the States so I understand that searches can seem complicated. If we can protect people's privacy, then we can all help with general searches that could be done.

If anyone does have specific information, perhaps they can use the Private Messaging service (PMs) to send you this info.

Monica  :)

Monica thank you for the information. The person I am helping still resides in Scotland. I will pass on the info you so kindly posted.

Well, it's my search for them. Makes it even harder to figure out.

It will be hard for you to do this from the States  :-\

I would suggest a follow up on the links provides by the National Archives of Scotland (NAS).

Not sure what info was given for birth mother on that 1954 birth cert, but with the name you initially posted, I couldn't easily see a marriage in the Moray area post 1954 which then makes it really hard to begin to think where the birth mother may have moved to.... :-\

One step at a time though with these type of searches. Maybe see what comes up with the formal links from NAS and then see what research avenues open up?
