James Bowman, bank agent, Armagh
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 23:49 GMT (UK) »
Wonder if anyone can help.

Looking for more info on James Bowman and his family.

He was bap. St Vigeans, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland 10/4/1801 to John Bowman, Schoolmaster of St Vigeans, and his 2nd wife Mary Cree.
Service of Heirs 1840-49 state he was a Bank Agent, Armagh.
From the internet I have additional details that he was manager of the Provincial Bank, Armagh, and in living in Abbey Street, Armagh in 1861.

From the Anglo-Celt newspaper (pub. in Cavan) there is note of "Death on 16/2/1850, Mary, 3rd daughter of James Bowman, Esq., Manager of Provincial Bank, Armagh aged 9 years."

Any further details of James and his family in Ireland would be appreciated.

James is also mentioned in Slater's 1846 directory of Ireland as manager of the  bank branch at that time, at 2 Abbey Street, Armagh

see : page 130

At the time of Griffith's valuation (1864 for this area) the manager of the Provincial Banking Co. at 1 & 2 Abbey St. is a Charles Griffth.

Thanks for that extra info Shane.
Can I ask you, do you know where I could explore any baptisms, marriages, burials, gravestone inscriptions, etc. for Armagh. Would I be best to contact Armagh Library/Archives, etc. direct?

Have a look at the links listed under ARMAGH RESOURCES-

You'll need to know what religion James was to find possible church records, etc. Many resources may not exist for the period or not be available online.
