McDONALD marriages and Baptisms
« on: Thursday 24 November 11 18:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi All ;)
Im wondering if anyone can help with some info please?Ive had a lot of help so far off kind Roots chatters and im hoping i can maybe get some more!
Im trying to find out if poss what churches my Ancestors married and were Baptised in i have the following dates
Marriage Banns 21 Feb 1807
Denis McDonald to Mary Dimsey Forester in Paul or Newlyn i think?
Baptism of their children
John McDonald 29th november 1807 again in Newlyn or Paul
Mary Dimsey McDonald 8th October 1809 in Newlyn or Paul

Sometime after 1809 Denis Died maybe at sea as i cant find any burial for him so far and Mary went onto remarry Thomas Richards in 1812.

Its just come to light that Denis was born in Ireland and Baptised as Roman Catholic so im interested to find out if he married in a Catholic church and if his offspring were Baptised in the Catholic church? Are family at some point turned to Church of England and i have a sneeky feeling it may of been after Mary remarried Englishman Thomas Richards, anyone know if its possible to check which churches were used it may be that of course Dennis may not have married as i only have the Wedding Banns record, sorry for the length of thread!Any help at all would be really appreciated
  Kind regards

Mary & John were baptised in the parish church of Paul

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=baptisms&id=1408334

parents were married in the same church

At this time, marriages had to be in the parish church to be legal. Only Jews & Quakers were allowed to conduct their own marriages. Newlyn is a relatively modern parish, created in 1851 from part of the parish of Paul.

Hi Osprey ;)
Many thanks for the reply and the info and links wow!
I may be a bit slow off the start as Religions are not my strong point but am i right in thinking that the church was Anglican back in 1805ish and not Catholic or was it used by both religions for marriages ,Baptisms etc?If not  could be that although Denis was Baptised Catholic in Ireland he wasnt practising Catholic?Sorry for all the questions!! And also for me being dim!
 kind regards

they're not different religions, but different denominations of christianity. The church was Anglican. There probably wasn't a Catholic church in the area at the time, but as I said, they would have needed to marry in the parish church for the marriage to be legal.

A Catholic church opened in nearby Penzance in 1843

Hi again!! :)
Ive just been reading up on marriage laws and apparently Catholics could marry in Anglian churches back then if there was no other R.C Church in the Parish to marry in else like you say Osprey the Wedding wouldnt be legal prevideing the Wedding was carried out as an Anglian service and after there was a blessing added by a member of the Catholic church, as the only R.C Church in ther parish or nearby didnt open in Penzance till 1843 as Osprey so kindly found out im guessing this is what might have happened
