John Shakespeare marriage
« on: Friday 25 November 11 08:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello , on Familysearch i have found a marriage for John Shakespeare to Jemima Woolrich at St Mary Shrewsbury in 1824 .

I think this date is wrong as John and Jemima baptised children in 1820 and 1822 - is anyone able to check the parish register to confirm the marriage date please .

Thankyou.

Gary.

Hi Gary

A well known 'Ancestry' site puts the marriage at 1824 also:
29 May 1824, John Shakespear & Jemima Woolrich,Shrewsbury.

Family Search:
I found the children of 1822 (Emma) and 1824 (Benjamin). There is also 1820 (John) and 1827 (Elizabeth) all bap. both at St Mary's.
There is also (1820) William Shakespeare, s. of John Shakespeare and Jemima, St Alkmond, bap.
24 Oct 1830, Sarah, d. of John Shakespeare & Jemima, St Chad's, bap.

There are other Shakespeare couples around that time, one in particular; Jacob Shakespeare and Sarah, their children's baptisms are at St Almond, interesting why William's baptism is at St Alkmond, when the others are at St Mary's.

The 1841 census:HO107/296/10/35/6 - St Julian (No E at the surname end, Shakespear). Need to remember some ages were rounded down in 1841 census.
John (45) & Jamima (40)
John (20), Benjamin (15), Emma (15), Elizabeth (12), Jamima (7), Anne (3)
These

Interesting 2 sources put the marriage at 1824...

Good luck.

Regards
Geoff

Hello Geoff and thank you fror your reply .   I think Jacob was the brother of John . They are both "nailors"  by profession and there ages are a couple oy years apart.

I have had a look on Ancestry and the marriage for 1824 is taken from the records at Salt Lake so it is not a primary source .  I really need to check the original with Shropshire Archives .

Best regards , Gary.
