help needle in haystack dominica
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 12:55 GMT (UK) »
hi i have quite a hard request i think.
my husbands sister has asked me to help trace her great grandfathers birth and family in scotland.
problem is she has no dates at all or areas.

this is the info i have
joseph nixon born scotland left scotland to arive in dominica (not the republic)
he arives in dominica and is a wealthy man he meets and has children with a black woman .
he dies early and leave his oldest son clifford his estate and money.
however this is lost when clifford himself dies young again no dates except
i do know cliffords daughter was born around 1941 in dominica
so im working on joseph haveing left the uk in perhaps 1891 to 1901 ish.
my question really is where to start do any of you know any sites that might help me.
would joseph of had to of gone through new york then to dominica,
i doubt there would of been lots if joseph nixons traveling to dominica from scotland at that time but then again i could be very wrong
i know its a needle in a hay stack type thing but its cought my interest and i want to help them.
so any ideas gratefully recieved thank you

hi dwalin
i,ve looked in passenger records for an j nixon going on your dates but alo before and after and none pop up as even a possible , the problem with the lists is that they can be very hit or miss as somw have full names some only initials and a surname and others with only a surname i looked at both going to the usa and too south america as well then did a google search for dominica and found this site which may help you www.candoo.com/generesources/  if you click on dominicafrom there you can e mail the national documentation and  library and information  services of dominica , if you can get a copy of the birth cert for any of the children hopefully you will get some more info on joseph as well .

hi the death cert has arived and as with lots of stories passed down the bit about his dying young was wrong.
joseph nixon died 1927 aged 80
which puts his date of birth aboout 1847
much earlier than i had thought.
it does not tell me his place of birth so apart from his date of birth i didnt gain much
the informant on the death cert was his house maid.
i have asked hubbys sister t try and have family find out his wifes surnamd so i can get marriage cert
odd doing other peoples research at least they know im only a amature.

well i,ve looked in the 1841-51-61 censuses for a joseph nixon born scotland and none show up but most are from the north of england in the 1851 cen there are only 8 records and one of those has a second forename all born eng .
