Hello Trevor,

Sydney Hawes b: 1889 in Islington.

William's service record is on the Army Service Records list on the National Archives (also available on FindMyPast if you have a subscription) WO97 / 3012 / 24 - it might give you some idea of his tours of duty and what medals he won etc

Thank you Spidermonkey,

I only have subs to Ancestry and they don't have the records ( At least I can't find them )   Can I view them on NA or do I have to send off for them ?

It looks as if William was in Egypt, where he was awarded Khedive's Bronze Star, and the Egypt 1882 medal http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/egypt_1882.htm

Edited to add - you can buy them online (I think) through the National Archives website.

Thank you for the link Spidermonkey..that's fantastic.

Will certainly enquire at the NA.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to link a thread  :(
