1841 census lookup for Hastings, SSX
« on: Tuesday 10 May 05 04:23 BST (UK) »
I am seeking the following ancestors. They were all in George Street, Hastings in 1851 and 1961, so am hoping they are there in 1841. The surname is misspelt frequently, variations include MUSTCHIN, MUSTCHEN, MUSTCHAN, even MUSTION and MUSTIAN.

Benjamin MUSTCHIN/MUSTCHEN, born 1796 in Hastings, Shipwright
Sarah MUSTCHEN/MUSTCHIN, his wife, born 1799 in Folkstone, Kent

Elizabeth HUTCHINSON, born 1794 in Hastings, hopefully her husband will be there too.

Any other MUSTCHEN/MUSTCHIN's in Hastings or anybody living with them would be great.

Regards
Sandie MUSTCHIN

5 centuries after the first record found for the family and I still have to spell my surname or it gets misspelt
Main family interest:
MUSTCHIN in Staffordshire, Surrey, Dorset, Sussex and Kent.
Variations of surname include MUSTION, MUSTIAN and MUSTYAN.

Hi Sandie

Have checked the 1841 census for Hastings including:
All Saints, St Michael, St Andrews, Holy Trinity, St Mary-in-Castle(out bounds), St Mary Magdalen, St Leonards on Sea, St Mary Bulverhythe, St Clements, St Mary-in-castle

but without success.

There is no one listed with the name MUSTCHIN, MUSTCHEN, MUSTCHAN, or even MUSTION and MUSTIAN.

Sorry to be so negative

Hi there

Sorry, I dont want to throw a spanner in the works here but I think we are being mislead - the 1841 census does not state that Elizabeth is the wife of Thomas Hutchinson.

Looking for the Baptisms for Charles and Mary we get the following:

St Clements, 22 May 1807, Charles Hutchinson, son of Thomas & Mary
No baptism for daughter Mary though.

But, to argue against that I have just found

Location: Northiam, East Sussex,  Date: 12 Apr 1819:
Groom: Thomas HUTCHINSON, widower
Bride: Elizabeth MUSTCHER

I wonder if the MUSTCHER is a miss spelling of MUSTCHEN

So, did Thomas marry twice, having the children with his first wife which could have been:

Location: Hollington, East Sussex,  Date: 13 Dec 1792:
Groom: Thomas HUTCHINSON, widower from St Clements.
Bride: Mary LAVENDER, from St.Leonard
Married by Licence.

This family history lark certainly keeps the mind active
