seeking detective work on the Allen's of Newark
« on: Sunday 04 December 11 22:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi, i'm looking for some help trying to track some distant relatives.

When my Great Grandad died during WW1, my Great Gran Edith Kimberley (nee Allen) remarried on the 19th July 1919 to George Allen (i think her second cousin??) in Newark. Edith already had one child (my Grandad Reuben Kimberley in 1914) but went on to have three further children with George whilst in Newark:
George E. Allen in 1921
Edith M. Allen in 1923
Frederick J. Allen in 1926

My grandad died in 1958, but i'm trying to find out if any of his step brothers or sister are still living, or when they died. I'm not sure if any stayed in Newark as they got older, and my dad seems to think that one may have moved to the east coast. It would just be nice to see if any are still living, or if not when and where they died, and if they themselves had children

not an easy task at all but i'd be glad of any advice or help.

You can cross another off the list

Thanks Carole - i had no idea, and my dad wouldn't have known about that either. So my Great nan lost both her first husband (my GGrandad) and a son to war.

Still not convinced about the George E. Allen though. I know its not unheard of, but if they married in the July and had him in the following January then that's a bit naughty :)
The George E. Allen i've found on BDM was born in Newark July-Sept 1921.

It appears Edith married in 1943 in Newark Registration District - see FreeBMD.

If that is the right Edith, her married name was Partridge. You mention one may have gone to the east coast - this could be her death:

Deaths Jan 1996
Partridge, Edith May, born 1 Jun 1923
Colchester, 4691C/180

That death certificate should give a birth place for Edith, but the marriage cert might be more helpful to make sure it's the right person.

UK death certificates do not give the p.o.b. of the deceased . The marriage cert should give father's name and occupation - and sometimes witnesses are members of the family - so that would be the best way to go.

Death certs give the name of informant - but not the relationship to person - and age given on death certs is only what the informant gave -so sometimes can be inaccurate

By 1996 (the death in question), UK death certificates do give the date and place of birth of the deceased. See the attached excerpt of a death cert of my great grandmother, from 1986.

Of course, the information is only as good as the informant.
