Gladys Rose Young m Bowley
« on: Monday 05 December 11 22:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to start the tree for my mother in law Gladys Rose Young.  I know nothing other than she married Leslie James Bowley in 1938 in Reading and that she lived in Reading thereafter.

I don' know if she was born in Reading or not.

I know that she worked at the jam factory in Reading but can't even find reference to there being a jam factory in Reading.  I think from what she told me it was located in the Rose Kiln Lane area.

I think she may have had a brother called Vic and a stepfather, Strong.

She has since passed so I am unable to check anything else.

Does anybody have any information that could get my investigation underway please.

Best regards
Louise

When was she born?  If she died after 1969 - her death cert will show her full birthdate

There are a couple of possible birth entries on freebmd which will give you her birth county  www.freebmd.org.uk

A copy of the 1938 marriage cert will give her fathers name

If she was born before 1911 - you can look for her on the 1911 census

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

If she was born after 1911 - her mothers maiden name will be shown against her birth registration on freebmd which may help find her parents marriage

OK so my partner has told me that he thinks she came from Yorkshire and she had 2 brothers Vic & Ron.  Managed to cross ref everything and I have a Gladys R Young born 1917 Ripon, mothers maiden name Parkins and a Ronald W Young b 1920 Reading mothers maiden name Parkins.

Do you think this is a safe bet or should I pay for the certificates?

Hi Louise,

I don't want to confuse the issue but I have found these entries which may be of use;
Reading St.Giles transcripts (ex BFHS);
Bapt;
21-5-1913 Leslie James BOWLEY  s/o Harry & Elizabeth,
23, Katesgrove Terrace, Factory hand,  born 7-4-1910

155-1-1919 Gladys YOUNG, d.o Frank Clifford and Mary Ann YOUNG,
70, East.St.  Soldier     born 25-11-1918

I haven't as yet found a marriage.

Hi Louise,
Further to earlier reply.
I see there is a marriage registration in BMD for  Gladys R YOUNG to BOWLEY Reading Vol.2c page 1073  in the Dec 1/4 1938

I've looked in the transcripts for Reading St.Giles, St.Laurence & St.Mary without success
so I'm suggesting they married in the Registry Office. These records are not available on-line.

There are other Reading parishes that I do not have records for so it could have taken place  in one of them.
