What uniform is this? Please.
« on: Thursday 08 December 11 22:38 GMT (UK) »
I've been searching online but I'm getting more confused the more I look.
Is this man wearing an Irish Guards WWI uniform?
His name is Danial Rourke he would have joined up in Ireland and he was a POW.

When I went looking for his service record the only thing I could find was a pink card stating the name Danial Rourke, his medal, that he was a POW and in the Irish Guards.

If this uniform is the Irish Guards than the pink card is more than likely his.

Its not an Irish Guards cap badge but its circa WW1....The cap badge looks like a uniform button?? so it could be that he is wearing it as a POW ??
The guy in the photo looks to have been a Regular soldier and is wearing 3 good conduct chevrons.

If your man is a Guardsman his records will be with Irish Guards Archives...They were stored in a seperate place to other regiments records..It will cost £30 to get a copy though

3214 Pte Daniel Rourke Irish Guards enlisted in 1908 and was discharged to pension in Aug 1918 with sickness.
He is on the Silver War Badge Roll on Ancestry

As the Medal card states one of the first to Belgium in Aug 14 and a POW.

I did think this was taken on leave. It seemed to be a photo of men from one area of Kildare, there are several different cap badges but maybe as you suggest that's because it's a group of POWs.
They are just standing in front of a hedge, only one is named and he's also from Kildare.
Oh well,
He's one of quite a few Grand Uncles, so not sure if I want to spend £30 on him, maybe when the recession is over, but thank you very much for the information.

You're second post came in as I was typing, now that is interesting as I know he contracted TB while he was a POW.
If I could just find out if this Daniel was from Kildare I'd have it. The number matches the record I found btw

I think perhaps we need to see the whole picture pse!!!

It would rather help with dating etc  ;) :)
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

They are Irish Guards collar badges or collar dogs.
