William TAYLOR and Elizabeth JEANES
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 20:12 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a record of my 3rd great grandfather’s marriage: he was William Taylor born abt 1817 in Yatton but moved to Bleadon : in 1841 (Class: HO107/967/5; Civil Parish: Bleadon; County: Somerset; Enumeration District: 4; Folio: 6; Page: 6; Line: 2 ) he is a mason with Elizabeth (both aged 20) and William aged 6 months.  In 1851 ( HO107/1936/413/25)  he is a mason, born Yatton aged 36.  Wife Elizabeth is aged 39, born Bleadon, and William is now Henry age 10, and ylorthere is Alfred 8, Thomas 6, Edmund 4 and John 2.  Their neighbours are Charles and Sarah Bailey and Abraham and Hester Jeanes (who sometimes appears in Bleadon parish records as Kanes or Jeans or...!).  I believe Elizabeth is Elizabeth Jeanes (Baptism 24 Oct 1813 at St Peter and St Paul, Bleadon,  Abraham a labourer from Bleadon and Hester: transcribed as Kanes).  In 1881 Elizabeth Jeane’s married sister Charlotte Phillips is living at 43 Palmer St Weston Super Mare with John Taylor (my 2nd great grandfather) and his family and described as ‘aunt’ and her daughter Fanny as cousin.
But I can’t find a record of his marriage.  I think he is the William Henry Taylor who died aged 68 1st Q 1885 registered at Axbridge:  they were living at Uphill in 1881, so although he was William in all the census records, maybe he was Henry for the marriage?
I hope you can help!

Hi

You first need to confirm Elizabeth's maiden name by buying a copy of of one of their children's birth certs.

Once that is confirmed - you can look for the marriage

Bear this IGI entry in mind when you confirm the maiden name

Can't believe I'm so silly not to have already got a birth certificate - I'll get back to you when I do!!!

But she's not a galworthy I believe, since there's an Elizabeth Taylor (and John) in the Barnstaple area in 1861 (Class: RG9; Piece: 1490; Folio: 42; Page: 26) born Instow, Devon where the Galworthy family came from.

Sorry to be a bother
Cheers

You are not a bother and please keep this thread open and post details from the birth cert when you get it so we can see if we can find a marriage for them

I've ordered an email version as well (since I am in Australia) so hopefully it'll only be a few days......

Have got the birth certificate:
Edmund Taylor Birth certificate: Burnham and Bleadon subdistrict of Axbridge: 29th Jan 1847 born at Bleadon, father William Taylor, a Mason: mother Elizabeth Taylor of Bleadon formerly Janes.  She made her mark.  Registered 1March 1847.

Looking through the marriages on BMD for any Elizabeth who married a Taylor in Somerset, Devon and Gloucester (Sep 1837 to Dec 1841):
I've found an Elizabeth James and a William Taylor might have married in Bristol 4th Q 1838, Vol 11 page 164.
And Elizabeth Hayne and a William Taylor might have married in E Stonehouse (getting a bit far away from Bleadon) 2nd Q 1840 Vol 9 page 346.

So I'm thinking of sending for the certificate for the Bristol William Taylor.......

Happy Christmas!!

Hi

I would email the GRO and ask them to confirm the maiden name from the original.  I have queried entries on certs which are not very clear and the GRO have been very helpful

Got the certificate..

Dec 26 1838 (exactly 104 years before my parents married!) marriage solemnized by banns in the parish of St John the Baptist in the county of Bristol William Taylor and Elizabeth James (Jeanes), both of full age, bachelor and spinster, both resident in Bleadon at the time of marriage: he a mason and his father Thomas Taylor a labourer: her father   Abraham James/Jeanes farmer ( or farrier – he was carter and ag lab in various censuses).  Married in the Parish Church, signed with the mark of William Taylor and signed by Elizabeth James, witnesses John Jeanes (this looks pretty definietly not James or Jones: he was Elizabeth's brother - 3 years younger tham she was) and Esther Maggs/Moggs.

Thanks folks!
