The Murphys of Newtown/Commons, New Ross
« on: Monday 12 December 11 14:09 GMT (UK) »
hello

At a bit of a loose end regarding my ancestor Mary Teresa Murphy b. 1871 +/- 5, in New Ross, Co.Wexford and her father and mother.  Father's name William Murphy, farmer b. 1820s ?  They were from the Newtown or Commons area.

1901 Census shows the mother Margaret (whom I believe to be a second wife and not the mother of Mary, and brother/sister) ...

As she was born after 1864, I'm sure there is a birth cert for her with the GRO but want to pin it down some more as Mary and Murphy are about as common a name as you can get.

I've tried ancestry but seeimingly to no avail ... anyone got any ideas ?

 :)

Probably better to try the Civil BMD Index on FamilySearch rather than Ancestry - but as you say, with such a common surname it will not be easy. I'd say there will be numerous Murphy registrations in the New Ross registration district during your search timeframe.

have you checked the extracted birth records for possible matches ?

one detail to watch out for - middle names dont always appear on the index..

the latest links for the BMD Index and extracted collections are included in the Introduction Topic in the Ireland Resources section - see :  Introduction to Irish Records
