St Andrews cemetary Newcastle/Jesmond
« on: Monday 12 December 11 21:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

I have found some old ancestors who were interred in St Andrews in the 1940's. They are in unconsecrated ground, section W, grave 40. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there are any maps online showing grave locations please?

i am sure tyne and wear archives will have maps, but i cant get there just now.

Hope someone can help,

Thanks

John

John,

Info and maps are available from Newcastle City's Bereavement services.

See

I have usually found them to be helpful.

What is the address of your target cemetery ?

Thanks Michael, the address is tankerville terrace in jesmond i assume.......i am 99% certain it is the large cemetery just past the blue house roundabout on the great north road on the way to haymarket.

I have just found a burial register that says someone was buried in the grave in the 1870's, then 2 children in the 1890's and then the first of my relations in 1946 and finally her husband in the following year, 1947.  There is also a tiny bit of writing on the page that says that the grave was "purchased" by a member of the deceased wifes family a matter of weeks after the last burial. Am i correct in thinking that this means there will be a headstone, unless it has been damaged and removed?

As 1947 was fairly recent, i would assume that a headstone, if in existance, would still be there?!

John

 John,

Give me names and dates and I will have a look in the cemetery on Tankerville
 Terrace.

I asked about address because different records use varying names for some  Newcastle cemeteries.   This one gets Jesmond Cemetery or St Andrew's Cemetery The two cemeteries in nearby Jesmond Road get Newcastle General Cemetery/Old Jesmond Cemetery and thankfully just All Saints Cemetery.

It's a lovely cemetary. George Orwell's wife is buried there. Unfortunatetly the council in their wisdom have vandalised the whole place by knocking over hundreds of Grave stones that they deemed a threat to health and safety. Well worth a visit if you like that sort of thing.
Re your stone, unless they thought it a danger it should still be standing. Even if it's not , it will be lying on the grave face up.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your help as usual.  I actually called into the grave yard a couple of days ago and found the correct section.  But i couldn't see a headstone or even work out where it should be, as there are so many blank spaces of grass with no stones at all.  I went back to Central Library, armed with names of a few headstones i jotted down.  After looking through the registers etc, i managed to plot the grave numbers of these stones and therefore work out the position of my ancestors in relation to some of these.

On my return to the graveyard, i did in fact manage to find their plot this time, but unfortunately there is no headstone!! Typical....just a lumpy patch of grass.  But at least i now know exactly where they are.

Thanks again everyone.

John,

For a possible next time, bear in mind that the Newcastle Bereavement Services are very helpful with siting of graves, even if no headstones. Their plans indicate how many plots between certain known points. In fact they sometimes offer folk an on-site appointment to exactly pinpoint plot etc.

That's handy to know. I know which cemetarys (cemetaries? sp? I should be ashamed of myself for not knowing for certain), several of my ancestors are buried in but doubt any of them have stones. Wee task for the new year :-)
