death record search
« on: Monday 12 December 11 22:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, can anyone help or advise me where i might find the death or burial record for my 4x great grandfather. He lived in Walworth Surrey around 1830, married Elizabeth Pitcher in 1827 at st peters Walworth.
I have a baptism for two children, Eliza Maria, and Charles Robert, July 1830 where his occupation is rope maker. His wife remarried in 1838, to a John Bennett, at that time a widow. She was from Loders in Dorset which  i think maybe could be where Robert came from as "Rope making" was thriving industry in  the Loders/ Bridport area.

 Look forward to any ideas,

 Regards Graham.

Hi Graham,

Checking the marriage and baptisms you mention, the man in question is called Robert Martin.

I think this is the correct 1841 census record for Robert Martin's wife (now Elizabeth Bennett).

1841 census: Portland St, (Walworth), Newington St. Mary, Surrey (HO107/1064, book 6, f 24, p 40)
Elizabeth Martin, 55, N
Eliza Martin, 12, Y
Robert Martin, 7, Y
Elizabeth Bennet, 40, N
Isabella Bennet, 2, Y
Elizabeth Bennet, 1 Month, Y
Edwin Sercombe, 7, Y

I would be willing to bet that the Elizabeth Martin in that household was Robert Martin's mum. It looks like from the 1851 census, Robert Martin (aged 7) was also Elizabeth Bennett's child. So presumably Robert and Elizabeth's son.

Have you been able to find a baptism for Robert, c.1833 in Walworth or nearby?

If that is Robert's son then that narrows down a period for his death from c.1832 to 1838.

Alexander

There is also this baptism, perhaps worth a look:

Walworth St. Peter PR
Baptism: 18 Jan 1836
Child: William Richard
Parents: Robert & Elizabeth Martin, Waterloo Street, Labourer

I know the occupation doesn't exactly match up but it might be their child. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to have a rope maker turn up as a labourer.

Hi, thanks for your interest, and sorry for not being clear on the name, "Robert Martin" is what i'm looking for.
Elizabeth Bennett was Roberts wife, she married John Bennett 3rd March 1838, and the Robert who was 7yrs 1841 and 17yrs 1851 was my 3x g, grandfather, son of Elizabeth and Robert but i cannot find a baptism for him. In 1852 he names himself as Robert William Martin on his marriage cert. to Sarah Smith. Have wondered if he renamed himself from William Richard to Robert William??
I havent been able to progress Charles Robert, or William Richard forward from the baptisms although did eventually find Eliza Maria Martins marriage to a Thomas Joseph Terrel.
So the death seems now to be between 1832 and March 1838. Still the search brings nothing, seems a pretty hard brick wall to crack, with both ends of his life missing.  :o.
