Did you search for any other children to this couple?
What did you find?

There are mentions of James and Thomas Scotney on http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk

Thomas is of Stamford but James may be a different person(s).

Search on:-
Scotney Stamford
"James Scotney"
"Thomas Scotney"

"Esther Manton" shows one in Stamford but in 1860.

Only snippets and you have to pay to see the full article.

David

Childrens Baptisms to JAMES/ESTHER, All Saints;
THOMAS 14 March 1821
MARY 23 March 1823
ROBERT 10 April 1830
JAMES 20 April 1830

Looks to me that quite a few of their Children died young.

I cant find James/Esther in 1841 Census so it looks like the 1834 Burial may be him.

There appear to have been 8 children baptised - all at Stamford.

The eldest son was called William (1819) ... this is often an indication of the father's father's name (but need not be).

There is a James son of William bap 1791 in Northants but (as I've already pointed out today) the existence of a siutable name in the IGI doesn't mean that it has to be yours (and the baptism was several miles from Wakerley).  :-\
