Tailor (journeyman)
« on: Tuesday 10 May 05 19:13 BST (UK) »
My ancestor (Thomas Costello) was referred to as a Tailor (journeyman) in the 1861 census. Whilst I understand the Tailor bit, what exactly does 'journeyman' refer to?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
The term Journeyman generally applies to a man who had served his apprenticeship and is a qualified worker in another's employ for example, my GG Grandfather Thomas John Hill was a Butcher Journeyman working for a man named Thomas Hayes. Thomas Hill was saving up to rent-out his own Butcher shop. He was eventually successful, and owned a lucrative Butchers in Clapham's 'Polygon'.

I hope this helps!

Ryan.
