death at sea?
« on: Wednesday 14 December 11 13:35 GMT (UK) »
I was just wondering if anyone knew what would happen if someone had perhaps died at sea. where would their death be registered? i'm having trouble locating the death record of my 2x great grandfather William Robertson Cowan, a ship carpenter/shipwright, born in 1872 normally resident in Greenock with wife Jane Paton Rodger. last child was born in 1911 so i know he was alive upto that point but he is not on 1911 census with his wife but it says she is married not widowed... any help would be greatly appreciated

hi janice
you say the youngest child was born 1911 do you have a copy of their or any other childs
marriage cert, if they named William as their father on that it may have deceased under his name
which would at least give you a time frame to work from

thank you elaine! I just checked my great grannys marriage in 1934 and it doesnt say anything so he must still have been alive at that time, i also checked his wifes death cert and she was listed as his widow in 1952!
