Johnny (Young) Allsopp, boxer
« on: Wednesday 14 December 11 16:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone help me track down personal details of Young Allsopp, who boxed professionally from 1918 to 1929?
His Christian name was John - he was apparently known as Jonty - and when he began his career he was said to box out of Llwynypia (that may not mean he lived there, but rather where he trained or even where his manager lived). For most of the 1920s it had become Trealaw (though the same caveat applies).
Searches of the 1901 and 1911 Censuses and the BMDs have come up with one or two possibilities, but none in the Rhondda.

      Here's hoping.

Gloucester, 1829).

Freebmd has the birth of his sister Edith Maud in 1908 - perhaps using her as your search criteria will get a result

Surname Alsop on freebmd

Carole, that is absolutely fantastic. I'd never thought of Flickr as a source of info.
What makes it even better is that I know Anthony and Jonathan Alsop, who responded to the publication of the photo - both were very useful amateur boxers and now coach the sport. It just never occurred to me that they might be related - the difference in spelling presumably got in the way. I note that John signed his picture 'Alsop' rather than 'Allsopp', so that must have been the correct way.
I'll get in touch with Anthony straightaway.
I was a bit dubious about inquiring on this forum, as I didn't really think it was going to get me anything I could be certain was the right man. Not for the first time, I underestimated the brilliance of RC members  :)
