shadforth church, the first vicar 1840's
« on: Thursday 15 December 11 20:08 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find any information on the Reverend R.G.L.Blenkinsopp who was the first vicar of Shadforth church 1840's onwards, I am interested in his life there in the community and if any Photos survive of him or his very large family. Maybe his children at the local school,  and the Rectory where they lived.

There is a little on the Church if England clergy database

http://www.theclergydatabase.org.uk/

and his ID number there is 4522

CCEd Person ID: 4522
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

It was not easy to find anything much on R. G. L. Blenkinsop because I could not find out what the full name of the Reverend was. He did however appear as R. G. L. on the following;

1839 - Ecclesiatical Preferment, Shadforth, Durham. Gentlemens Magazine.
1845: Erected Girls' School, Sherburn Hill.
1862: Attended the Geneva (Switzerland) Conference of the Evangelical Alliance.
1875: Living at Hoppyland (Bishop Auckland). Also a Colonel Blenkinsop living there.
(I double checked this one. He was listed as Rev. R.G. L. Blenkinsop). Source : "Local records: or, Historical register of remarkable events which have occurred in Northumberland and Durham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Berwick-upon-Tweed".

1835: Harriet (Collingwood) Blenkinsop serves papers for divorce from Richard's father George T. L. Blenkinsop. All sons mentioned in documentation when George tries to dispose of his assets.
1836: Richard George Leaton Blenkinsop married Mary Emma Ilderton of Ilderton, Northumberland at Ryton Parish Church 27 SEP 1836.
1857: Mary Emma dies?
1858: Richard re-marries - Kezia Mary Bell at the Old Church, St. Pancras, London. 29 NOV 1858.
1876. 25/26 SEP 1876. Richard dies. Will leaves part of residue to Kezia.
1916: Kesia dies? York area.
Google "The Blenkinsopp Scandal" for futher details of the George T. L. Blenkinsop saga.

Hi Barry

Thank you for the information, in your last 2 replies, I did have some of this already, but have a problem because there seems to be different dates for his birth, it doesnt help that this part of the family have switched thier names around,
the original name was Blenkinsopp Leaton, when Anthony Leaton Married Elizabeth Blenkinsopp in 1776 @ Whickham Church. Making Blenkinsopp Leaton.
They then had a son George Thomas. who decided to become Blenkinsopp Leaton Blenkinsopp,  His records are a nightmare to follow especially his military & Marriage records, as his name differs in various records which I have now completed.
Richard is his son.  I have a baptism registered at Whickham Church for 11.05.1808 with his birth as 04.03.1808 @ Whickham House being the son of George Thomas Leaton & Harriott Collingwood.
However another record given to me shows him being born 15.01.1809 (ep/Whm5) at Whickham House.   I have no way of verifying these 2 different dates.
The Blenkinsopp scandal ,  I have various versions of this, including the london court record findings, all of which mount up to the same thing, showing our George Thomas to be a nasty piece of work.
Thank you for your help

Regards Jenny
