1870 Census Franklin Township New Jersey
« on: Friday 16 December 11 00:23 GMT (UK) »
I found my great grandmother Jennie Snider (spelled Snyder) in the 1870 US Census with her father Geo J Snyder (George Jacob) and mother Rachel.  Jennie was listed as 1 year old in this census.  I was trying to figure out a few things.

First, In DAR and SAR applications as well as US Census, her birthplace was listed as NJ.  In the DAR application, it stated Chestnut Ridge.  In the SAR Census it was listed as Hohokus NJ.

When looking for George Jacob Snider, it appears that he was living in Rockland County NY in Ramapo.  I found an 1870 Land Map showing a G J Snider living on what is now South Monsey Road in Airmont NY which is in Rockland County NEW YORK.

I am in quandary over here...in the 1870 Census it stated Franklin Township with Post Office Ramsey in NJ...whch I cannot find anywhere.

Any help?  Thanks So SOOO much!!!

The George J. Snider in Ramapo NY is recorded in the 1880 census with wife Catherine and children Jennie 11 (born New Jersey), Etta age 9, John age 3, Harry age 1.

Is this the same family?

Yes ...

The mother Catherine was the step mother to Jennie and Etta...their mother Rachel Catherina Bogert died in the 1870s from diphtheria.  The story was passed down how the girl's father George Jacob Snider would place his fingers down the girl's throats to clear the flem.  Their mother did not make it and was buried next to her mother and father.  Those bodies along with 500 others were relocated to the George Washington Cemetery in Paramus when several cemeteries were going to be used for other things.
