Sherwood/Charles William Siemens

Hello: Im researching the Tunbridge Wells residence of famous engineer Sir Charles William Siemens (1823-1883) close friend and associate of Sir David Salomons (1851-1925). Siemens residence was off Pembury Road about 2 miles east from the centre of Tunbridge Wells and is referred to as "Sherwood" and sometimes "Sherwood Park".

Siemens bought the residence in 1874 and moved in 1875 after extensive renovations and was reportably built about 1865.Soon after Siemens moved in to Sherwood he aquired adjoining land and the estate became about 160 acres. It was one of the first homes to utilize steel in its construction and was completely electrified with its own plant on site.Siemens also had built a large greenhouse where he conducted experiments excellerating the growth of plants by electric light.

Today the building has been split up into apartments and one of these apartments is for rent by an estate agent and is now described as being in the gated community of "Badgers Holt"off or near Blackhurst Lane.

I would be interested in any information about the history of this residence, chain of ownership etc, newspaper articles about the building/site.....Regards..Ed Gilbert
