Francis Gurney Lookup request
« on: Sunday 18 December 11 05:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi

whilst trying to find my wifes ancestors on the 1901 census I turned up a possible Francis Gurney with the occupation Soldier.

Could anyone look up where he served and for how long.  Also do the records give any details that would prove this was the right man DoB, parents next of kin etc?

The Francis I am after was born about 1880 to Richard and Agnes Gurney in Ormskirk/liverpool area.

Many thanks

Nick

Many thanks Gortonboy thats fantastic info will look at the links you sent.

Are these records available (i have downloaded my great grandfathers from ance**try)

Irony is we used to live in a house that backed on to fulwood barracks for many years and even have been round it on open days without realising this link.

He married Maude Singleton and is my wifes great grandfather via Francis Junior

cheers

Nick

Hi Nick

The records will be on Findmypast. The medal rolls - QSA and KSA - are on Ancestry. It is very unusual for a man to be in the initial stages of the Boer War; come home; be in the 1901 census; and then return to qualify for the KSA.

Redvers Buller was the commanding general of the Natal Field Force.

Ken

Hi Ken

he does seem surprisingly well travelled ;) but I guess I'll find out more when I get hold of the records from FindMyPast.

Will look up the ancestry stuff to get his number etc.

I guess he must have liked it if he named his son after his commanding office.

I wonder how long it took to get to South Africa and back in those days?

cheers

Nick

P.s. Found the KSA but where is the QSA on ancestry?
