BUNNAGE/BOLLONS marriage-HOLBEACH 1904 - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 18 December 11 12:14 GMT (UK) »
I would greatly appreciate a lookup for a marriage between John Bunnage born 1879 York and Hannah Bollons born 1881 Pinchbeck Webbs, Lincolnshire which occurred in Sep qtr 1904 Holbeach district, Lincolnshire.
I am trying to find out who John's father was and his father's trade/occupation.
Seasonal greetings to all.

Hello to you

Firstly, Hannah's place of birth would be Pinchbeck West or West Pinchbeck - one and the same but whichever way you like is OK.
John birth is registered in Dec Q 1879 at York as you know.  However I couldn't find him in 1881, 1891 or 1901 either in York or anywhere else.  The only BUNNAGE in York in 1881 was Hannah BUNNAGE, a servant aged 19 born in Crowland Lincs, not very far from Holbeach.   The ref is - piece 4717 folio 4 page 2.   I am thinking that John was probably illegitimate.

I looked up any BUNNAGE in Lincs in 1881.  There were none in Crowland, but several in Spalding.   Particularly interesting was Harriett BUNNAGE aged 12, also born Crowland (Hannah's sister maybe?) living with her grandparents William and Ann BROUGHTON in Spalding.  ref  piece 3202  foio 118 page 8.  The BROUGHTONs are connected to the West Pinchbeck area.
So there is a definite connection between York and Lincolnshire.  Maybe John was living as a child with some Bunnage extended family and could have been under a different surname until he married.

The Holbeach registration area covers many parishes and the only way to be sure is to buy his marriage certificate.
I hope this has helped.

NC.

Hi Nottschick,
I think you may have hit the nail on the head! John Bunnage b 1879 appears in the 1881 and 1891 census with his grandparents John Thomas and Mary Ann Bunnage nee Balderson.
Hannah Bunnage b abt 1861 in Crowland is their daughter!
So many thanks for your reply and information.
Happy Christmas and all the best to you and yours for 2012.
Cheers!

Hannah is in Withington, Lancashire in 1901, wrongly transcribed as Bernnage and in Chorlton in 1911. A death is recorded in Manchester in 1948.

I have a lot of illegitimate births on my tree and it is rare to find the correct father on the child's marriage certificate. On one, it is left blank, two say 'putative' and the rest have a a made-up name.

The birth certificate is usually a more reliable document, although there may be no father's name.

I forgot to mention that, in 1901, Hannah has a visitor, Isabella R Bunnage, born c1884 in Withington. Both are described as single. Isabella's death is recorded in Machester in 1943.

It seems that Isabella is Hannah's daughter and I will have to send a personal message regarding this.

Hi DCBNWH,
Just realised you have sent me two other message and I thank you for these and the information.
I haven't seen the 1901 census you refer to so I will have a look for that.
Thanks again for all the information.
