Many thanks Mary,

Just a PS, have done some more work and it would appear the death cert I was working off is incorrect. Mary's husband was Hugh.

Back in the 1980s I corresponded with a gentleman called McGiffert who lived in Toye, Downpatrick, and who was keeper of the Killyleagh Family History Society records. He kindly quoted from some of the Killyleagh records for me. He and I were very distantly related.

hello to everyone and best wishes for the season.

I have been very lucky this past year to have been helped sop much with my genealogy searches all of county down. I have posted these names before, but was unaware that there was such a mucked up connection. james MAXWELL born portaferry 1807 married eliza(beth) MCGIFFERT c 1835 co down  I thought she had 3 daughters and 3 sons and couldnt work out why margaret ann Maxwell born 1837 Married to JAMES WARNOCK was not in her father james maxwells will, nor was she mentioned by her aunt ISABELLA MCGIFFERT in letters to usa(MCGIFFERT LETTERS).

I then read henry Mcgifferts will 1864 leaving money to eliza isabella and the rest of the mcgiffert siblings and here is MARGARET ANN WARNOCK and her brother WILLIAM MAXWELL also left goodies from UNcle Henry MCGIFFERT. .I akso see william maxwell married eliza warnockc 1856. very very confusing. almost certain Margaret ann Maxwell and the children from james maxwell and elizabeth mcgiffert are related but i just dont know how. Margaret ann maxwell(warnock) and william maxwells father is named as william. everything seems to be in a huge mixing pot with inter marriages and same names.

can someone help me distinguish between the 2 families and was william and margaret anns father william maxwell a brother of James maxwell    ... kindest regards  merry

Margaret Anne Warnock nee Maxwell is my gggrandmother, parents were William Maxwell and Eliza McDonnell, have specked that their father was Thomas Maxwell and Margaret of Corrog/Corrock as on lease for Ballygraffin mentions names of a Thomas and an Andrew Maxwell, though only guess work .On will of Samuel Mcgiffert has a Thomas Mcdonnell of Ballyspurge and William Maxwell of Ballygraffin mentioned.I believe Eliza McDonnell's family came from Ballyspurge as a Thomas Mcdonnell is witness to the marriage of William Maxwell of Ballygraffin.
The tithe leases of the 1820'ies  have a William Mcgiffert of Ballytrustan entered, son was James Mcgiffert who married a Rose McKibbin, daughter of Thomas Mckibbin of Killydressy, mother was a Maxwell.
james Mcdonnell of Portaferry married a Rachel Mcgiffert,a daughter Susan died at her aunts house at Corrock Cottage,a Isabella McGiffert as per death notice.
I notice a Henry McGifford maried a Mary Mcdonnell in the igi index just before Henry and Robert and William were born.
Hope this helps abit as I am interested in understanding the family connection with the mcgifferts.

Hi Merry

You were going to check up on a Mary McGiffert in your family line, any luck ? I was looking for a Mary who married John Cleland (not Hugh) in Co Down C1830s

Thanks

Thanks merry

There appears to be quite a large group of McGifferts in C Down, do you have an idea of how many families there may be?
