John O'Hara born 1865 in Co Tyrone?
« on: Wednesday 21 December 11 18:18 GMT (UK) »
My 2 X Great Grandfather John O'Hara appears on the 1901 Census in Creggandevesky,  County Tyrone and in the 1911 census he was living in Portadown, Co Armagh.  Both times he stated his place of birth was County Tyrone.  He was a year younger than his wife Margaret (McSorley) so must have been born 1865.  However, I just cannot find a birth record for him, although one should exist as he was certainly born after the start of Civil Registration.

The only John O'Hara for 1865 which I can find was born in Keady, County Armagh.  Does anyone know if Keady came under Co Tyrone boundaries at that time?

Or can anyone assist me with finding a 1865 (possibly 1866?) birth for a John O'Hara in Co Tyrone?

I am so frustrated at only being about to go back to the 1860's with my Irish roots.  He was a RC and was married to Margaret McSorley in Beragh, Co Tyrone on 4th July 1888 (although strangely no Civil Registation appears for that marriage, although I have had it confirmed by the church).

Thanks

Richard

Civil registration of births did start in 1864 but in the early years many were apparently not registered (became compulsary in 1870) so if there is no record for John O'Hara it's possible he was 1) born before 1864 (census ages aren't 100 % reliable) or 2) the birth wasn't registered.

As you can see by the 1901 census, John is 34 (born c1867) and wife Margrit aged 30-

In 1911 John is listed as age 45 (born c1866) and wife Margaret is a year older rather than 4 years younger-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi.  Thanks for that.  Yes, I saw Margaret's age differed in the two censuses but I have her birth certificate which shows she was born in June 1864.  Unless John was born in another year from 1865, I don't think his birth was registered and I don't think I will ever find out.  That's the thing with Irish genealogy I suppose.

I guessed as Margaret's age was exact in the 1911 census, then John's might have been too.
