Donald Mackay, Nightcaps
« on: Thursday 22 December 11 17:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am researching a Donald Mackay who went to NZ (from Scotland) around 1890.  I feel confident I have found him on 1919 electoral roll as a farmer at Nightcaps.  The reason I am so sure is because his sister went out later and her marriage cerificate said she was a domestic servant at Nightcaps.  As Donald never married she could have been tending to him.  He sold the farm and retired to Invercargill where he died in 1922.
I would like to establish where in Nightcaps the farm was situated and when exactly he bought and sold it.
Regards
Jean (Scotland).

Hi
You can pay at LINZ to do land searches
otherwise the best idea would be local museums/genealogy groups who may have collected old maps, details
history books
http://www.westernsouthland.co.nz/pages/viewentity.php?entity=409
Otautau museum maybe
http://www.westernsouthland.co.nz/pages/viewentity.php?entity=204

Southland NZSg may have some answers

Bye
althea

the southland sites above had a book
A most interesting book on the history of Nightcaps is 'Pasture, Coal Seam and Settlement' A Centennial History of Nightcaps and District 1880 - 1980. by John S Thomson.

Emailing a southland library, they may look up and see if there are any farm references

You mention on the other list the probate says Donald left nothing to sister in NZ (Alexandrina)
Did her marriage cert confirm parents..just wondering considering there others by that name..married and single

In 1919  Roll there are also other DOnalds in that area
eg at Waiaraki, farmer at Wallace Electorate

What electorate did you find the Nightcaps based Donald Mackay? I can't seem to spot it
Just thought if we try and track back from there once I find your reference
The Directories can then also be checked..they may give some more exact info/address
Bye

Donald and Alexandrina had the same parents.  Another lister told me that Donald was on the 1919 Electoral Roll as a farmer at Nightcaps.

I can send you email link to this one at Wairaki, which covers the Nightcaps area..so you can see the hard copy
this person is there in 1914 also
There is married Alexandrina Mackay at same elctorate? can't recall if it was Castle Rock..would need to check
pm me your email address if you want to see it
