Family Tree Maker 2012 SYNC Disaster.
« on: Wednesday 28 December 11 15:05 GMT (UK) »
For some time FTM 2012 has been giving error messages when synchronizing. If I try again it usually succeeds but not this time. FTM tells me that all is in SYNC but it is not. The error message states that I must unlink my tree and upload a new linked tree with all that that involves. Sometimes FTM will not even link to the internet.

Does anyone else have these problems please?

The only time I had problems was when my hard drive on my home PC failed & I had to re-install everything. Even though the family tree was exactly the same tree in exactly the same location I had to upload a new tree, re-invite the people who could see the tree and delete the old one. It was a bit of a pain, but at least I had my offline backup & of course the Ancestry tree is another place to keep a backup.

Thanks for you reply Braindead. I phoned Ancestry and they talked me through unlinking the faulty tree and re-uploading from the website. It's easy when you know how but I am not sure I could do it again without some help. They told me that there is a known problem that Ancestry is working on, but judging by the lack of response to my post it doesn't seem to be troubling anyone.

Hi

"but judging by the lack of response to my post it doesn't seem to be troubling anyone."

It doesn't mean we are not watching nor that we do not care.

It may mean that you are one of the only ("lucky") ones using FTM2012,
and most are "all" stuck on versions from 2011, 2010, 2008, 1876, etc.,

Looks like ignorance is bliss in this case (and mine)

Mine is most definitely the 1876 version, the one that's not compatible with anything  ;D

I keep thinking I WILL update it this year, but the new ones all look so unfamiliar and American, just like the Ancestry pages  8)

I've ordered 2012 but it's not arrived yet.  Only reason for upgrading is that it was a cheap specialthat Ruskie told us about.

Given Win 7 not liking 1876 version, same as Ray's, I've had to upgrade, so hope no troubles on installation.

I had a similar problem (and still do) a few days ago after a mandatory update to my new product. I googled and founds LOTS of folks with the same issue... most folks have not had it solved and somehave had corrupted files.... I am probably going to scrap this software until I read it's been fixed

It's going from bad to worse. I have now had to upload from Ancestry three times.  Each time I get a new linked tree in FTM but when I delete the old tree it unlinks the new tree so I am back where I started.  There is something wrong here and will phone again but last time I had to wait half an hour to get through. Anyone thinking of upgrading to 2012 I would wait until this mess is resolved.

I would certainly agree that the Tree Sync feature is flawed & if that is the reason for upgrading from a previous version then I'd wait for next year when, hopefully, it'll be sorted.
But I, like many others, upgraded  to FTM 2012 to take advantage of the cheap subscriptions to Ancestry it offers. If that's the case then it may still be worth upgrading.
