Help needed finding Walcot
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 11:23 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please tell me where Walcot in Somerset is, i have tried finding the place on a map but have been unsuccessful so far, My GG grandfather was married there in 1824, both must have been working in the area even though they where born in Yorkshire and returned there after their marriage.
Happy New Year to you,

Could anyone please tell me where Walcot in Somerset is,

A good way of finding places is to google the place-name + genuki.

In this case you get this result: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Walcot/

it also shows up on a search on Streetmap http://www.rootschat.com/links/0j25/

The GENUKI entry is a little misleading. Their description is of only the central part of the original parish, which had been split into three in 1840. In 1824 Walcot included all of Bath north of the river, except for the relatively small central area which was within the medieval city boundary.

Just to add that 36B is the Kindsmead Division of the parish of St. Peter & St. Paul.

The ancient parish was everything within the thicker red line, including the Kingsmead area (and another detached part further north). These are not the subdivisions introduced in 1840, nor do they match the GenUKI description (1868). Presumably they applied at some later date.

According to the "Historic Parishes of England & Wales" by the History Data Service, the boundaries are taken from an 1852 Map by Cottrell.
