Waikato Immigration Scheme
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 03:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi All - Happy New Year
Waikato Immigration Scheme - Matoaka passengers.
In May 1865 my ancestor and family were one of the "seventy three families intended to be sent to Kohekohe".  Have tried Papers Past to find out when they were sent there, with no luck.  Also would like to know living conditions, when they left the area etc - can anyone suggest where / who would have this information?
Thanks
Arjay

Do you have a name
it may be easier to find more if we can hunt for a surname

what I;ve started to do is to look at passenger list seem of the many John Smiths and see where they were
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shipstonz/PassLists/matoaka1865.html

In 1893 for instance one of the families is still in KOHEKOHE
so maybe they did, at least some go to the promised destination
Name EMMA PONSFORD
Electorate Franklin
Residence Kohekohe
Occupation Household dut

Hello Arjay.

If you have not already done so you will find another couple of threads discussing the 'Waikato Immigration Scheme' with a RootsChat search. Click on search at the top of the page.

Then on PapersPast

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=q&hs=1&r=1&results=1&t=2&txq=waikato+immigration+scheme&pbq=&dafdq=&dafmq=&dafyq=&datdq=&datmq=&datyq=&tyq=&o=10&sf=&ssnip=&e=-------10--1----0waikato+imigration+scheme--&x=24&y=9

There are some 15 newspaper hits for that subject.

Happy hunting.

Hi Althea
Thanks for that link, (Appendix to Journals), it states that they were sent to their land 9 March 1865 (much earlier than I had thought).
