Mary Burrows abt 1807
« on: Monday 02 January 12 05:46 GMT (UK) »
Mary is my 2nd great grandmother. She was born about 1807, was convicted in Edinburgh Midlothian  Scotland 21 July 1834.
Voyage date 11 June 1835 sailed on the vessel Hector to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) Australia.
She was convicted for 7 years. Mary married Thomas Vinen 3rd October 1836 in New Norfolk Tasmania.
I believe she was a widow when she was convicted. I would like to find out what I can about her prior to her conviction and transportation.

Hi Spices,

Welcome to Rootschat!

I think you would get more help if you post was on the Scotland board, and I am sure that a moderator will be good enough to move you post pretty soon, then you will be up and running!

Good luck,

Hi Spices

Welcome to RootsChat from me too  :)

The place to check to criminal trials and papers is here - www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

From there, searching for a Mary Burrows brings up potentially:

Precognition against Mary Burrows for the crime of uttering base coin. Address: Cant's Close, Cowgate, Edinburgh 1834. Verdict: Guilty, Sentence: Transportation - 7 years.

You can order photocopies of papers from the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) that could perhaps give you more details.

Hi Barbara

From the link above, if you look at the top tabs, you will see Welcome - Browse - Search.

If you click on Search, it takes you to another screen, with 'Search catalogue records'.

On that screen, see 'Search for': then a box with 'Type in your search terms'. In this box, type in Mary Burrows. Next to it, click on button for 'Phrase' - then Search.

You will see 17 results, click on 'Display Catalogue results'. If you get too many results here, you can add time parameters for the search. Also, you need to note that the search terms are very specific in terms of spellings (you cannot use wildcards for spelling variations).

This is where you have to go through and try and identify relevant records and where I found the entry I included above.

Quite often there will be two entries relating to criminal trials: Precognition with ref code normally starting with AD and then the actual trial papers, starting normally with JC.

Barbara these are just indexes. You would have to request photocopies from NAS. Shouldn't be too expensive (depends on number of pages) and always good to ask for quote beforehand, quoting the reference numbers for the documents you require.

Monica  :)

Many thanks Monica for the directions. I have requested a quote for copies of the documents.

The Precognition has an address where Mary was living so hopefully this will help my research.

I did go online to Scotlands People but it appears there census commence from 1841.
Do you know of another site I could try?

Again Many thanks for your help

Hi Barbara

Good luck with the documents and hope you find plenty of clues to progress!

The 1841 census is really the start of the censuses as we know them. There were some earlier censuses carried out but the information from them is not in the style that we can use or are really relevant for genealogy purposes unfortunately. Those pre 1841 censuses that still exist are fairly localised and very patchy. More importantly none really available on line (except for a very few where someone has transcribed and put up on a webpage).

Apart from Scotlands People, you can try searching on www.freecen.org.uk/  Free which we always like and coverage for the earlier censuses (1841 and 1851) nearing 100% for many areas now - see www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html

Hi Spices, I have also found Mary Ann Burrows, married to Thomas Vinen, to be a distant relative of mine.
I've been following Thomas' trail and have started on Mary's.
I have only just started my search and hope you see this.
Id like to know if you have found anything.
Hoping to hear from you.
Thankyou
