Isaac Stanley/Standley
« on: Monday 02 January 12 13:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi all!

I have an Isaac Stanley in my tree. He was born in Birmingham Warwickshire in around 1811. He is the following ages in each census;

1881 - 70
1871 - 60
1861 - 50
1851 - 33 (Way out!)

I found a possible death record for him in 1882 and he is not found in the 1891 census. (or at least I cannot find him!)

I know that he married a woman called Mary A (which I assume is Ann or Anne). I don't know when they married or her maiden name. They appear together from in 1851 onwards (I can't find them in 1841) and their eldest child Isaac junior is aged 5. This means they must have been married  (hopefully) before Isaac junior's birth in 1846.

Isaac senior and Mary A appear with their children in the census' mentioned above. Here are the children they had that I have found in census;
Isaac Stanley (1846) (appears with this family in 1851 and 1861)
John Henry Stanley (1849) (appears with this family in 1851 and 1861)
Emma Stanley (1850) (appears with this family in 1851 but not 1861 - possibly died)
Esther Stanley (1857) (appears with this family in 1861 but not in 1871 - possibly died)
Alfred Stanley (1859) (appears with this family in 1861 and 1871)
Matthew Stanley (1860) (appears with this family in 1861 but not 1871 - possibly died)
Albert Stanley (1863) (appears with this family in 1871 and 1881)

On the 1851 census, Isaac senior is not only listed as 33 (when he should be around 40 years old) but there is also a boy named George Whithead (aged 12) living with the family who is listed as 'son in law'. How can this be? The boy is only 12 years old? Also this is the only census where Isaac gives his place of birth as Knowle, Warwickshire.

I am desperate to find the marriage of Isaac and Mary A and also to find them in 1841. A baptism of Isaac would also be great! If anyone can find these things I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Emma

P.S. Please see my post in Warwickshire Lookup requests regarding Isaac's son John, as I have given full census details for some of the census' listed above in this message.

Note - Isaac Stanley's occupation in 1861 and 1851 is carter so hopefully this will be the same in 1841, making him easier to locate.

Aha!!! Very possibly! There is a George Whitehead listed with the family in 1851 (although he is listed as son-in-law not brother-in-law).

Son In Law quite often used instead of Stepson.

Really? I may have to investigate this George Whitehead then to see who he is. He only appears with them in 1851 (aged 12). I cannot find Isaac and Mary Ann is 1841 so I can't say if he was with them before.

Any help with a baptism for Isaac would be a big help!

I found 2 Isaac Stanley's on FamilySearch.org who were baptised in Warwickshire in 1810/11. The most promising one is this one;

Isaac Stanley
Baptised 29th Dec 1811, Honily, Warwickshire
Father - Matthew Stanley
Mother - Elizabeth
(Parents living in Wroxall)

This one is most promising for 2 reasons. First, Wroxall and Honiley are only 5 miles from Knowle (where Isaac claims he was born in the 1851 census). Secondly, his father's name is Matthew and Isaac had a son called Matthew. I know that names were often passed down though the generations.

Truely !

They married in 1842, so try and find them as individuals in 1841 - with George being with at least his Mum, Mary Ann - and maybe if she was married, his Father.

The term Son in Law did not have the same meaning as today.
Is it possible that George Whitehead is Mary Ann’s child before her marriage?

Worth remembering Polly is a nick name for Mary Ann, should you come across it.

Age discrepancies, Enumerators were more concerned with occupations and living conditions than ages. Many were households were illiterate and were unable to calculate what their age would be on the date of the next Census. It is also possible that the Enumerator has made an error when he has copied on to the Census forms.
