John Henry Davies (or DAVIS)-Kate Clark
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 21:25 GMT (UK) »
John Henry Davies (son of John Davies, deceased), born ca. 1871, married Kate Clark  5 Jan. 1905, Aldershot, Hampshire.  His occupation was listed as "assistant foreman".  He was married previously, was a widower.  He was 34 yrs. old.  Kate's given name was Catherine but she apparently preferred the nickname.  Kate was the daughter of Robert and Emily Clark, born 12 Oct. 1879 East Leicester, Leicestershire, England.

I have tried to locate them in the 1911 census for Aldershot and England in general.  No success.

The only information I have found ( per IGI) is a John DAVIS baptized 22 Oct. 1871 St. Micheal's, Aldershot, father John DAVIS, mother Fanny.

I was unaware that John Henry Davies or DAVIS appears to be a very common name.  I am having great difficulty in locating a death record and any other information for this couple.

I would appreciate any suggestions or leads that might assist me in this search.

Thank you!  Anne

We can only give you general info re: 1911 as lookups are not allowed by Rootschat

If they married in 1905 - do you know of any children born to them before 1911 as you may be able to find an entry that way

Hi,

Thank you for your interest.  I do have access to the 1911 census through Ancestry.com.  I was unable to find John Henry Davies or his wife in it.  However, I may have located Kate Davies; discovered the death of a Kate Davies in 1907, age 28 yrs., Farnham district.  This could explain why she and her husband were not located in the census for 1911.

I do not know if they had any children.  Perhaps, if this is her, she could have died in child birth.

  Best wishes, Anne

How sad - so many young women died as the result of childbirth in those days.

Assuming it was childbirth - there are 2 births in 1907 in Farnham prior to her death

Births June qtr 1907
Frederick Davies    Farnham  2a 128
Thomas Richard Davies   Farnham  2a 145 - died June 1907

Hi Anne,

I just wanted to mention that Ancestry does not have all counties for 1911 yet.   Hampshire is one that is missing at the moment so if your couple were still living in Hampshire in 1911 they would not show up on any Ancestry search.

Hi Linda

Kate/Catherine doesn't show on the free 1911 index either

Many thanks to those who are trying to assist me with locating John Henry Davies (or Davis) and his wife, Kate.  I have ordered the death record for a Kate Davies (Farnham district 1907) from GRO.  I am not certain if this is her but her age is correct (28 yrs.) as she was born in 1879.  If it is her, then perhaps, her husband relocated elsewhere after her death.

I was unaware that Ancestry.com does not have the complete 1911 census for Hampshire on its website.  Thank you for that information.

Also, I appreciate the information you shared, Carole.  Will definitely look into it if Kate is the right person.

Best wishes to all those who generously have taken the time to look up information and share it with me.  I need all of the leads I can get with this one!!!

Before reading your last post Anne I'd had a bit of a search for Kate's parents. If Robert & Emily are correct, it could be them in 1881 living in Derbyshire, father Robert born Scotland and is commercial traveller. Explains why they moved around so much!

Yes, you are right, Linda.  Robert and Emily Clark moved around frequently which has made the search for the Clarks quite difficult.  Robert was a commercial traveler (draper) and lived in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Nottinghill and eventually Aldershot where he eventually settled from 1891 to his death in 1920.  I have had many issues tracking this family down!  I finally located daughter Kate's marriage recently!
