James and Helen Burt
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 02:05 GMT (UK) »
This couple migrated to New Zealand from Liverpool in 1906 and settled in Dunedin. They had seven children. James must have falsified his birth date to enable him to make the voyage - it is shown as 59 when he left Liverpool but when he died in 1911 he was 71.
Their children were:
Helen Hume Milne Burt, married James Geary
Mary Murray Burt, married Alfred Millar McBride
Catherine Robertson Burt - never married
Andrew Burt - no information
Jemima Burns Burt - never married
James George Burt, married Margaret Knox Johnson and later, on her death, married Kathleen Harriet Rumble
Henry Milne Burt, married Eva Pattorson

My desire is to find out about any descendants of my grandmother's brothers, Andrew and Henry. I had believed that Andrew did not come to New Zealand but I have been assured that he did but separately from the others. Traces of the others have been found because they have more than one given name Andrew, on the other hand, appears to have had only one. I have been advised that his wife was Jenny but Jenny Who? As there were nicknames for Helen (known as Nellie), Catherine (known as Katy) and Jemima (known as Mimie) waht was Jenny given name.

I know Henry was a World War I veteran - he served and was wounded at Galipoli and also in France. I also know that he was married to Eva and lived in the Christchurch region.

I would appreciate any assistance in tracing descendants of these two men.

Hello

 .. and welcome.  :)

As you haven't given an idea of years of birth for Henry Milne and Andrew BURT, I've found it necessary to look back through some of your previous threads.

Henry was easy enough to find  - born circa 1891 ... and I see that back in 2008 on another thread, a chatter has provided "1 March 1882" as Andrew's birth date.
I notice also that the BURTs were all born in Scotland.
[It's helpful for us to have all this additional information. ]  ;)

Henry Milne BURT was married in 1920 to Eva Maud PATTORSON (unusual spelling - maybe the "O" is an error ?)
[Birth details for any children of this couple, won't appear online as the index only goes up to "today's date", 1912.]

Sometimes the easiest route to tracing descendants, can be by sourcing death notices from newspapers.   [If this is something you're unable to do yourself, then there is generally a volunteer here, available to help out with the task.]

So firstly we should find where in NZ Henry died / is buried ?

Thanks for information provided thus far.
I know of Henry's WW 1 record. My motivation to find that was a message from a Scottish contact, Peter Milne. Peter advised me of the Milne connection in the Burt family. He advised of an elderly cousin of his who remembers a young New Zealand soldier visiting near the end of the War. She said he had advised that he was a relation.
No, the "o" in Pattorson is not a mistake. I found the burial records for Eva's parents in the Dunedin cemetery records.

Barrie
