Hiring a researcher in Sri Lanka (Ceylon)
« on: Monday 09 January 12 06:35 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone advise me if it is possible to hire a researcher in Sri Lanka to do genealogical research (particularly relating to the British period) in Colombo area?

I've had a good google around and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of said doing this kind of work... is it because of the fairly limited and can I say 'primitive' conditions one would have to work under or is there just no demand??

Cheers,

Peter J Oakley

A Researcher might not do too well in Ceylon. However you can buy books on Ceylon BMD from England.

https://www.kabristanbookshop.com/product-category/sri-lanka-publications/

The only known (that I know) Library that has some books on Ceylon is Salt Lake City. Closed for Virus.

Have you tried Families In British India Society? www.fibis.org

They may have some Ceylon records?

This post is a couple of years old now and I actually got in touch with some-one who supposedly did research in Sri Lanka. I’m not saying I was ripped off but I got a nil result  for the money outlayed!!

I did contact the Kabristan Archives and I can tell you I got some really good results and purchased some of their books in PDF form which gave fuller details than their indexes. My queries were basically looking for military baptisms, marriages and burials for the 73rd Regiment of Foot in Columbia and the Kandy district.

Now recommend them as first port of call for that regions research.

FindMyPast has "British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms".

Might be cheaper to search there? ;D
