British Library - India Office
« on: Monday 09 January 12 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone any dealings with search records of Library. Wish to know if details of age, where born etc.,is given before applying for copies of details.
I have for a long time been searching for a George Harding b. 1804, Stawell, Somerset.
I have been pointed to two entries on Library Index. One is a marr. 1836, Bengal. The other is a burial of a George Harding 1838 Bengal.
As I have not been able to glean any info. of George apart from baptism giving his Parents and a baptism of a Henry Wilcox at Butleigh 1830 (Butleigh a village close to Stawell) Father named as George Harding (Soldier). Mother never married.
Hoping there is a connection and can bring my search to a conclusion as there are no Census records or deaths in U.K.
Thanks for any help, Syljun

Hi George

I also have indian ancestors, and it can be quite exciting when you find, them but very frustrating trying to trace them!

I have visited the library on a few occassions, and for me when I looked at the cost of paying them to research for me, versus my time, they were very expensive.  I think you also need to be specific about details, such as name, year, and area to search in.

Although I have looked at the LDS website this morning and found the following...
George Harding born ?, married Mary Ann Burn, 19th September 1836, Lucknow, Bengal.  The record you were referring too.

Other suspects though...
George Harding born 1805, marrying a Christina Searman on 29th May 1846, although in Madras
George Henry Harding born 1808 marrying Mary Scott, 24th September 1832, Fort William, Bengal

Possible deaths
George Harding 20th August 1838, Landour, Bengal, occuption Riding Mast 3rd Cavly (the record you refered too)
George Henry Harding 27th Nov 1852, Fort William, Bengal occuption draftsman

If your George married Mary Ann Burn, and he was the George that died in 1838.  They appear to have had one child,
William Harding born 15th September 1836, christened 30th March 1839, Lucknow, Bengal.  Maybe why they were married?  William was born 4 days before their marriage?

Hope this helps you ;D

Kind Regards
Trippy  :D

Hi Trippy,
Thanks for that info. I did in fact send for Burial Cert.of George who died 1838 but no more info. than was on Index. Very disappointing and cost £18.00. I was hoping his age might have been a clue.
Reluctant to send for Marr. info as an e-mail to Library did not give me much hope of age, probably says "of age".
There was a burial of a child George Harding 7m 28th May 1839 Location Secrole Benares, Bengal.
Would this be anywhere near Lucknow? Perhaps another child.
Web-site of Lucknow Cemetery has a few MI's but only of Officers.
I am more inclined to think George b.1805 is nearer to my search going by age but I do know that George Harding was bap 1st April 1804 at St.Edward Church, Stawell, Somerset (the one I am looking for). I also believe he is the soldier who fathered a child Henry Willcox bap. 1830 at Butleigh, Somerset. a village close to Stawell. The mother Edith never married maybe hoping for his return. Perhaps George never knew he had a son. If they could not write no letters would be passed between them.
Thank you for your interest and grateful for your help. Syljun
