Enumerator was literate?
« on: Thursday 12 May 05 00:08 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Food for thought

One of my Yorkshire ancestors stated his birthplace in 1851 census for Lincolnshire was according to the enumerator a place called Hesketh. It does not exist except in Lanc border area. In fact due to 7 years research, a degree in Egyptian squiggly things, new spectacles, a super computer that number crunches, the place in question is in fact Bubwith! :o which does exist ::) Obviously a deaf, blind, illiterate person taking the census details from a broad Yarkshire man! Only good thing was a least people are on the cenus, we just have to find them! :'(

I went round for ages chasing my tail over two census entries for my ancestor.

One said he was born in Bolton Lancs the next one said Poulton Cheshire.....

It turned out to be Poulton Lancs. :-\

I have the 1841 Census for Binsted, West Sussex. Comparing this with later censuses and other records I have come to the conclusion that the enumerator was hard of hearing, but could walk in a straight line!
Linberry, Chatfield, Faulkner, West in West Sussex
Towell, in Shoreditch and Exeter
Spurling from Norfolk
Bateson from Norfolk
Snell, Lorkin, Norman from Suffolk
O'Boyle/Boyle from Donegal
Murray, McCann, Gunn from Sutherland
Davis, Bute from Woolwich

Census information contained in this post is Crown copyright: www.NationalArchives.gov.uk
